DO WHAT YOU WANT

Over 300 vocational and technical training programs are available to meet the needs of both individuals and businesses. Yet young men and women seem to behave differently when it comes to choosing a career.

Don’t go by what you see around you: take the time to explore all the vocational and technical training programs open to you! Take the on-site test to determine your occupational interests. The results will lead you to discover trades and occupations you may never have dreamed of.

Powerful stereotypes still exist even today. You just have to look at the gender breakdown of students in vocational and technical training programs. Men outnumber women (58%) in the vocational training (VT) sector, while women outnumber men (57%) in the technical training (TT) sector.

Moreover, women are present in only a few VT sectors. In fact, three-quarters of them are concentrated in the following four areas: administration, business and information technology, health, beauty, culture and food and tourism. In TT, two women out of three are enrolled in administration, business and information technology, health and social education or legal services. There are almost no men in the sectors preferred by women.

What’s more, a glance at the 10 most most feminine and more masculine programs in 2008-2009 shows that more young men than women opted for auto mechanics, fitting and welding, electromechanics, automated systems, machining technologies or carpentry. In the TT sector, boys dominate in information technology, electronics and mechanical engineering.

However, things are changing. So take the plunge! Explore all the VT and TT trades wide open to you on headingforsuccess.com!
