EMPLOYMENT PERSPECTIVES
According to Emploi-Québec’s data on professional prospects, Québec will have to fill 700,000 jobs from now until 2011, and 1.3 million jobs from now until 2013. At least a third of these will require either high school vocational training or college technical training.

Filling these jobs represents a problem for Québec because young people who arrive on the job market cannot necessarily take advantage of the job openings made by retirement departures or created by economic growth. For the period between 2007 and 2011, the principal challenge for the labour force will be to fill jobs left vacant by retirement departures (an estimated 454,000 jobs). The other 246,000 jobs will come from economic growth.

For this period, employment will be up in 23 of Quebec’s 33 economic sectors. For example, in the case of durable goods, the principal gains foreseen come from jobs created in the manufacture of transportation materials,
metal products as well as the information and electrical products sectors. In the services domain, the sectors that will create the most jobs are healthcare and social services, professional services, scientific and technical services and retail commerce.

Numerous industries which are not particularly adept at creating jobs have a large proportion of their labour force made up of older workers. These individuals will be leaving the workforce in large
numbers in the next few years and will have to be replaced. This is most notably the case in the public sector, whether in health or public education and
administration, especially provincial administration. This is equally the case in agriculture, forestry, the mining industry, primary metal transformation, and transport.

This situation will bring about difficulties in recruitment in a number of growing enterprises in all economic sectors and in all regions of Quebec. Young people interested in a vocational or technical job can profit from this.
